Vision of the Department
Develop the department as a centre of higher learning to mould a new generation of students having social commitment and enabling them to contribute towards economic empowerment of the nation.

- To provide quality education in the field of Economics and mould the students to suit the national interest with social commitment.
- To equip them to analyse the local, national and global economic trends.
- Train them to take up social responsibilities as well as catch up good career.
History of the Department
The Department of Economics in this college was started in the year 1980, the year in which the college was established. Government of Kerala sanctioned the college as per Order No. 44819/B3/ 79 Edn.dated 02-07-1980 and the University of Calicut gave affiliation to the two pre-degree courses (III rd Group with Economics and IV group with Commerce) in that year. The College and department of economics began functioning in a rented building arranged by the College Sponsoring Committee near Kodanchery town. In the year 1982, the College and teaching Department were shifted to the semi-permanent buildings constructed by the sponsoring committee in the new college campus, which is 1.5 Kms away from the Kodanchery town. The college started functioning in the new three storied building with more facilities in the year 1993-94. The department faculty rooms, research room and class rooms are functioning in the ground floor and second floor of the building
Programmes offered by the Department
At present the department offers BA Economics, MA Economics and PhD in Economics. The BA programmes is based on the Choice Based Credit Semester System(CUCBCSS) and MA programme is based on Credit semester System .Students have the option to elect Arabic ,Hindi or Malayalam as second language , and one optional course offered by other departments for BA. For MA programme even though there is no provision of option for students in affiliated colleges, the college opted Research Methodology and Environmental Economics as the optional courses.

Important Milestones

1 | 1993-94 | The Undergraduate in BA Economics was started with Modern Indian History and Mathematical economics as subsidiary subjects. |
2 | 1999-2000 | Post graduate Programme in MA Economics was started. The first two batches followed the non-semester system of teaching. |
3 | 2001-02 | PG Semester system was introduced. The programme consists of four semesters. Students are required to study 14 compulsory papers and two optional papers. Besides, there is the project work and viva-voce. The optional paper ‘Local Level Planning’ was replaced by ‘Environment Economics’ from the academic year 2006-07 onwards. |
4 | 2009-10 | Calicut University Choice Based Credit Semester System was introduced to UG Programme. The Programme is based on direct grading system. Programme consists of six Semesters. Students are required to study 10 Common papers, 8 complementary papers, 14 Core Courses, one Elective Course and one Open Courses. As a part of the Programme they have to do one Project and the report is to be submitted. Besides this there is an external project viva-voce after the completion of University Examinations. |
5 | 2013-14 | The Quantitative Methods for Economics Analysis-I (Statistics) of the fourth Semester BA changed to third Semester and Quantitative Methods for Economics Analysis-II (Mathematics) of the third Semester changed to Fourth Semester. |
6 | 2014-15 | CU CCSS of UG Programme changed from direct grading system to indirect grading system. In the revised curriculum the programme consist of 34 courses-14 Core Courses,10 Common Courses,2 Complimentary Courses, One Elective and One Open Courses. In addition to Project report a compulsory Study Tour is introduced in the fifth Semester. |
7 | 2016-17 | Department upgraded as the Research Centre by the university of Calicut.
The centre was inaugurated by Dr.Mohammed Basheer KP. Hon.Vice-Chancellor University of Calicut. |
